Hi and welcome to Thursday’s Episode 37 in Season 2 of “My Pandemic Year Experiment” on this thirtieth day of April in the spring of 2020.
Season 1 and 2 are a two-year examination of how bits of wisdom changed during the “normal” pre-pandemic and then in this unfolding pandemic year.
Previously in Season Two, the Pandemic Year
S2 E36 — Turning Lemons into Margaritas; S2 E35 — Was this Pandemic Year a 1-Off or New Way of Life?; S2 E34 — Why Is This Kicking Off the 4th Industrial Revolution?
Related from Season One, the Normal Year
S1 E37 — Day 37 of My 1-Year Experiment; S1 E36 — Day 36 of My 1-Year Experiment; S1 E35 — Day 35 of My 1-Year Experiment; S1 E34 — Day 34 of My 1-Year Experiment
Context
Six days ago I asked a wide range of people the following set of questions:
-
- When we get to the other side of this COVID-19 chasm, what will have to be reimagined?
- Given the rippling effects of interdependencies and supply chains, will anything in your life or industry or relationships with your clients or customers dramatically change as a result?
- Do you envision a new normal?
- Or, will it be the same old, same old?
Dave, a former client and one of the executive mentors I recruited had this to say:
Steve, How quickly our world can change. When you sent me this email we all thought the world was normal. Today we long for that normalcy, but look through fog into a future that is most certainly uncertain. I long for more than one-dimensional contact. Are you up for a Zoom, FaceTime, or Skype video chat? Let me know when would be a good time for you.
Evidence
“3” Steve Zahn, 51: “You’ll give of yourself, and your kindness will elevate anything you add it to. Add it to words to make confidence. Add it to moments to make profound memories.” Scorpio
This TauBit of Wisdom may turn out to be the most profound expression of what it will take if things get much worse with the pandemic.
Random ones that make me want change my sign.
“5” Steve McQueen (1930 – 1980): “There comes a point in every commitment when the newness has worn off and the grind begins. Stop and take a walk up the proverbial mountain so you can look down on this with the benefit of a sky-high perspective.” Aries
I guess I included McQueen’s today for two different reasons.
The first sentence does describe the lifecycle of love affairs and the early stage of startups. I recall a serial entrepreneur telling me that the US is great at getting to one, but sucks at what it takes to go from 2 to a 1000. In other words, the newness of the venture wears off as the company struggles to make its way in the marketplace and take on lots and lots of paying customers.
The second reason is I use the metaphor of looking out over the ridge of a mountain to encourage strategic and scenario thinking.
“3” Steve Winwood, 71; Stevie Wonder, 69: “You’ve been through challenges that other people can relate to. You’ll notice a recurring theme here. You’ve dared to want more for yourself than was offered. Keep believing you can have that.” Taurus
I’m guessing this might have been the underlining reason I reached out to my community and to tap into their collective wisdom.
“5” Steve Carrell, 57; Steve Martin, 74; Steve Wozniak, 69: “When we believe a thing, it seems like a fact, and when we disbelieve, we assume it’s a theory or an opinion. Your golden move today will be in being slow to decide what you believe. Let all the ideas entertain you.” Leo
I want to believe this — haha. It’s a serious reason I’ve undertaken this experiment, which unexpectedly extended into a pandemic version.
“3” Steve Kerr, 54: “You’ve an unconventional approach to a very conventional activity. This will be a fun thing to share with others, and you could even become very well-known for it.” Libra
One can only plan for the worst and hope for the best, when it comes to surviving pandemics, right? Tracking TauBits of Wisdom is something even I scoffed at in the beginning.
“4” Steve Aoki, 41: “Sometimes knowing the theory behind a thing can help you learn it more or less completely. But mostly, experience is the best teacher. It puts things not only into your mind but also into your being.” Sagittarius
Later on in his life, I read, Leonardo da Vinci reversed this TauBit of wisdom. He famously experienced all he could before disciplines of knowledge began to segment what was experienced into subject. Later in life he turned to theories to better understand all that he had experienced.
“3” Steve Harvey, 62: “You’ll show up today in a way you can be proud of later when you’re telling the story. These are, after all, notable times. The way you play it will go down in the history books.” Capricorn
Maybe the way a game show host plays it will go down in the history books or a documentary on Netflix, but not so much for me. Notable times, now that’s an understatement, right?
“5” Steve Jobs, (1955 – 2011): “There’s no point to interacting on autopilot. Fresh topics, interesting questions and receptive, curious interactions will cause the spark that leads to exciting relationships.” Pisces
Especially when shut-in and trying to figure out how all of this plays out over time.

- Just picked up “Bob Dylan In America” by Sean Wilentz. Maybe because of the subliminal messaging like the times are a changing and the answer is blowing in the wind, but I kinda like Sean’s fanboy becomes music critic becomes historian surrounding Dylan’s life and times.
