S1 E100 — Running out of Determination and Grit by the 100th Day

I’m struggling. It’s killing my passion.  I can’t find a balanced portfolio of creative activities — managed by “Working on the Business” that I force myself to do.

“5”  Steve Carell, 57; Steve Martin, 74; Steve Wozniak, 69: “If you’re feeling a little low on determination and grit, focus on making it easy for yourself to do the thing you need to do.  How can you clear the way?” Leo

The Tau of Steves: What You Don’t Know Could Fill a Book

Evidence

Hi and welcome to Friday’s Episode 100 in the first season of ” My 1-Year Natural Experiment” on this 11th day of October in the fall of 2019.

Friday.  Finally.  As I look back on the week (My Weekly Time Blocks) I notice I attempted to devote portions of each day to specific passion projects.

For quick scans I chose to color code activities.  So, I chose orange for working on the business tasks; blue for working on my memoir and legacy (Volume Three); red for “The Tau of Steves” and green for my work series (Volume Two).

This afternoon I returned focus to my research on key phrases which capture the first 150 years of this American experiment from Fantasyland.

      • Great Awakening; Franklin printing for profit evangelical tracts he didn’t believe; 1700s Enlightenment.
      • 1800s Reason, Learning and Science dissolving by the 1850s into magical thinking;
      • An Age of Belief and Foolishness; excitable escapees (and of hustlers and the hustled); 1850s 66% Baptist / Methodist churchgoers
      • The Rapture moments before End-Time.
      • Joseph Smith. Like Sci-Fi fan fiction with multiple levels and planets;
      • 1850s New Technologies Drive Magical Thinking; Homeopathy Fake Medicines; Mesmerism and Phrenology;
      • Holy roller, double-cross, confidence man, bunkum, and sucker.
      • Hustling—Had Received A Blanket Indemnity; Gold Rush as Mexican War ended; Personal reinvention suddenly happening wholesale; Secret Plots of Fantastical Conspiracies of Scale and Power
      • Truth Is Deliberately Hidden And Can Be Discovered

Random ones that make me want change my sign.

Oh I will, will I?  Sure, by balancing passion project tasks while I force myself to work on the business, McQueen’s Holiday Tau points to customers in my future, right?

“3”  Steve McQueen (1930 – 1980): “You could use a few connections that will nurture your talent.  You’ll align yourself with our own interests in a more public way.” Aries

Smith’s Holiday Tau is something I live by — an understanding I’ve learned by being in love with Emma the Baroness all these blissful years.  (She’s looking over my shoulder, isn’t she?)

“5”  Steve Smith, 30: “The selfless nature of true love allow you to appreciate who a person is without requiring that person to be like you or even to be fully understood by you.” Gemini

Right, I believe, although this statement borders on the tortured SPAM grammar I frequently find on my blogs.

“2”  Steve Howey, 42: “Someone will be good at the things that you are not good at, and you will be able to help people who have entire different sets of skills than you can contribute.” Cancer

Here’s what I’m finding.  All I try to do is pause every so often and fill in a time block with a line describing how I really spent my time.  I’m withholding judgement about what I was supposed to be doing.

I just want to habit-train myself to note stuff down.  Later guilt will kick in to persuade whoever that inner me is to note what I said I was going to do today.

“5”  Steve Carell, 57; Steve Martin, 74; Steve Wozniak, 69: “If you’re feeling a little low on determination and grit, focus on making it easy for yourself to do the thing you need to do.  How can you clear the way?” Leo

As I figured out which career I’d launch next I discovered that fear of speaking in front of an audience topped almost every body’s list.  So, I forced myself into a corporate training profession.

“5”  Steve Greene, 34; Steve Guttenberg, 61: “Most people know fear.  They admire those who come up against it and try to go on in spite of it.” Libra

Sorry Steve, without looking back I’m sure I wipe more of your Holiday Tau than any of the other Steves.  But, here’s the thing.  This is a key lesson to pass on as a legacy.

As I write Volume Three and recall the challenges facing me and how I handled them or didn’t, Steve, your TauBit stands as a wise teachable moment.

“5”  Steve Aoki, 41: “If you regret, you reject the person you were and the choices you made.  What if you could accept that you did your best back then?” Sagittarius

Let’s stipulate Nash’s TauBit of Wisdom twists something attributed to Albert Einstein. But, the last part makes it more valuable to retain.

“5”  Steve Nash, 45: “If you’re still getting the same result, you either haven’t implemented what you learned, or it wasn’t the lesson you were looking for.  Look elsewhere.” Aquarius
